I couldn't agree more with Mr. Hemmingway! I am not a great wine expert but I do know what I like and I like Cedar View Winery in Sanger, California. My facination with wine began over 50 years ago when my nono used to give me a drop of wine in a glass filled with water! I can remember feeling very grown up when nono gave me this great treat! There is a family "rumor" that I used to get under the dining room table at nonni and nono's and reach my hand up and try to grab nono's wine glass for a little taste. But, I'm drifting from the focus of this story... Cedar View Winery.
Back in March my friend Donna Large introduced me to this lovely little winery. Donna was and still is a member of the winery's wine club and quarterly she ventures out there to pick up her wine club shipment. In March she invited me to go with her and I am glad that I did. We took the scenic route there of which I blogged about and shared some beautiful pictures. I was unexpectedly treated to some yummy wine tasting! Cedar View prides themselves on producing wines using heritage grapes. You can read more about Cedar View here.
At the end of June is was time again to head out to the winery to pick up Donna's wine club selections for the quarter. During this visit I decided to take the plunge and join my first wine club! One of the perks of being in the wine club is your wine tasting is free! We tasted six different wines including the three that were this quarters club selections. The following wine descriptions are quoted directly from Cedar Views June 2012 wine club information letter.
2010 Alicante Bouschet "Dulce Noche" - This is our first foray into "port" production and we think it is a real winner! Made entirely from our estate grown Alicante, it is fortified with 190 degree proof grape brandy with 19% alcohol and 7.5 brix residual sugars. Try it with your favorite dessert or a piece of chocolate. Delicious!
2011 Viognier Reserve - This is the first Viognier Reserve that we have produced. Consisting of 82% Viognier and 18% Muscat Blanc it is all estate grown from "third leaf" vines. The wine just bursts with ripe apricot, jasmine and citrus with a long, clean finish. Chill it and taste it tonight!
2009 Maripose County Cabernet Sauvignon - Grown on a hillside just northeast of the town of Mariposa, thie Cabernet really reflects the place it was cultivated. A rich earthly Cab, the wine has a mushroom/fresh earth undertone with a black cherry aftertaste. A little Zinfandel was added just before bottling to bring all the flavors out.
Cedar View Winery is located on Frankwood Avenue in Sanger, just south of Kings Canyon (Hwy 180) Here are a few pictures that I took back in March. This first picture is the view from the parking lot looking towards the back patio and tasting room.
These next three pictures are some of what you see as you walk back toward the tasting room. I really like the use of old wine barrels and old vines as decoration in and around this winery. I may have to incorporate some of these ideas in my back yard!
These last three pictures are the view from the patio that is outside the tasting room. The patio is available during business hours for a picnic or just a resting place. Donna and I plan on packing a picnic basket one day and bring the guys out for wine tasting and a little al fresco lunch!
Well, thanks so much for joing me today on this little journey back to Cedar View Winery. I highly encourage you to investigate this little gem on your own and I look forward to hearing all about your experience!
Cathie
